Description

Introduction

The application process for health professions programs is quite competitive. According to the AAMC, from 2023-2024 over 50,000 students applied to US MD programs and of that only about 20,000 matriculated. Dentistry exhibits a similar trend - According to ADA reports, from 2023-2024, over 11,000 applications were received and of those about 6,700 students matriculated. The competitive admissions process can be the most challenging hurdle for students who are passionate about this field. A competitive applicant must possess a solid background in basic science education. Nova Southeastern University offers a best of its kind bridge program to prepare students for a multitude of careers as healthcare providers. NSU’s Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program is taught by professors who foster a robust learning environment contributing to a positive campus climate. NSU graduates master core medical sciences and gain insight into their personal strengths, preparing them for future professional education. Our panel presenters are individuals with keen interests in each of the following health professions- MD/DO, DMD, and AA.

Importance of Bridge Programs

There is a need now more than ever to educate the next generation of healthcare providers. The process of gaining acceptance to professional schools is objectively competitive. By sharing our program, we can expose educators and students that bridge programs like NSU MBS can be the difference maker in their future goals by providing a bridge in all fields of medicine including MD/DO, DMD, AA, PA and more!

About NSU MBS

This panel will provide insights from current students and MBS graduates. To meet the needs of modern learners, our MBS program is offered in a virtual or hybrid format. This fosters an environment that is accessible to students globally. The program is staffed by dedicated professors who believe strongly in empowering students to become compassionate, well-rounded clinicians. Our MBS faculty also teach for numerous Health Professions Division (HPD) programs, providing students with realistic exposure to professional medical education. Students master core topics in healthcare such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and immunology. Additionally, students are trained in courses relating to professionalism, ethics, test preparation, cutting edge topics in personalized medicine, and research principles. Courses are designed to include clinically relevant examples which engage students and equip them with the knowledge necessary to excel as healthcare professionals. NSU MBS also provides students with many opportunities to network, volunteer, engage in research, and serve as teaching assistants. Our diverse and inclusive NSU MBS program emphasizes team building, peer mentorship, and prepares students to become valued members of any inter-professional healthcare team.

Concerns from the pre-professional applicant

Most pre-professional students are concerned about the nuances of the application process, gaining acceptance to their preferred program, and being adequately prepared for professional coursework. By providing more information and personal experiences from current and graduated NSU MBS students, we can equip ASPBP participants with knowledge to prepare their students on the path to becoming healthcare professionals.
