Description
The medical education field is experiencing a paradigm shift, moving away from traditional means of content delivery to a more interactive approach like flipped classroom. A flipped classroom session emphasizes student-directed learning utilizing in-class time for application of acquired knowledge. However, in addition to providing students with the sufficient amount of information prior to the session, it is also worth considering the quality of preparatory material, which correlate with student engagement (Guo, 2014). Research has shown that short videos under 15 minutes do a far better job at holding students' attention than do lengthier pre-recorded lecture material (Guo, 2014). These "microlectures", are a highly effective teaching tool that help maximize the impact of information delivered and retained in as little time possible. With media production software and hardware becoming increasingly affordable and user-friendly, it is easier than ever for faculty to create engaging, highly effective content. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be familiar with multiple, low-cost and user-friendly resources that they will have used during the session in small groups to design engaging microlectures on a variety of randomly assigned topics. Furthermore, participants will have learned how to effectively use an established peer-review rubric to improve the overall quality of content produced both within the session and in the future.
Session Objectives:
- Define the rationale for the use of video microlecture when flipping a classroom.
- Describe the qualities that make an effective microlecture
- Identify common problems encountered when converting a traditional lecture to an microlecture video
- Create/design a short video microlecture on a provided topic
- Evaluate a faculty-produced video to improve its quality using a peer review template.
