Name
Great Research, Bad Writing: Why Manuscripts Are Rejected and What to Do About It
Date & Time
Sunday, June 9, 2019, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
John Kappenberg
Description
Many potentially important medical education manuscripts are rejected, not because of the research, but because of poor writing. Often, reviewers would like to see a work published but cannot recommend it. Experts have addressed writing skills for researchers, but there is a dearth of guidance for medical educators. As a result, important articles in medical education are submitted but never published, which is a loss to the researcher and to the profession. The session addresses this issue.

Session Objectives:
  1. Provide experience in correcting obstacles to organization and writing that lead to manuscript rejection:
    • Review the principles of organizing a manuscript and writing for a medical education journal;
    • Give participants an intensive experience in peer reviewing a manuscript, becoming aware of the reasons for rejection, and how to overcome problems;
    • Provide a package of resources that researchers can use to evaluate and improve their next manuscript before submitting it for publication.
