Description
Antibiotic resistance is an international crisis and antibiotic stewardship (AS) provides a mechanism to combat it. Antibiotics are unique in that they are prescribed universally and not by one particular specialty. Also, the misuse of antibiotics has unique public health implications. The appropriate management of antibiotics requires effective collaboration between diverse health professions and the public. Thus, all healthcare professionals must be mindful of appropriate use and early, integrated education for all medical professionals is necessary for AS to be successful. Medical educators design, develop, and deliver curricula, educational content, and assessment tools. It is essential that all medical educators possess a fundamental knowledge of appropriate antibiotic use, AS concepts, and understand how AS principles can be integrated into their teaching. Unaware educators may convey misinformation during educational activities and give messages regarding antibiotic prescribing that can undermine appropriate prescribing efforts. Until recently, principles of AS were not taught, and there is still variable penetration of AS principles into various curricula. Thus, current medical educators would benefit from specific training in this area. We aim to lead a focus session with medical educators to introduce AS concepts and explore opportunities to integrate those concepts into curricula, educational activities, assessments.

Session Objectives:
  1. Describe fundamental principles and practice of antibiotic stewardship
  2. Identify resources for further education and training in antibiotic stewardship
  3. Explain how principles of antibiotic stewardship can be inadvertently undermined in planned educational activities and the "hidden curriculum"
  4. Implement antibiotic stewardship principles into existing educational activities and environment
  5. Design education activities using active learning techniques to support antibiotic stewardship principles
