Description
In light of changes to the MCAT, pre-requisite courses for medical school entry and core curricula in nursing and allied health, and core competencies in these fields that increasingly include social and behavioral science, medical and premedical educators are being asked to modify and expand curricula. This session explores the opportunities and challenges of creating social and behavioral science curriculum and corollary teaching strategies for future medical professionals.

Session Objectives:
  • Describe recent shifts in the landscape of medical practice and medical education that present new opportunities to teach social/behavioral science (SBS).
  • Identify ways that traditional SBS content and pedagogy may or may not be informative or meaningful for clinical practice.
  • Apply best educational practices (problem based approaches, spiraled content, authentic assessment, curricular integration, etc.) to teaching key concepts in SBS that are relevant to clinicians.
