Description
This session focuses on how to help students integrate content, as well as how to assess that cognitive integration. Interest in integration has been growing over the past 30 years, since the Edinburgh declaration with a view of integration as pertaining to both cognitive activity and curricular structure (Bandiera et al.,2017). Many studies describe integrated curricular structures in various schools and medical professions (Islam et al., 2016; Hlavac et al.,2017;Misra and Hasnain, 2017; Postma and White, 2017) but very few tackle the cognitive activity that students go thru to integrate content (Laksov,2014; ). In this session, we will focus on cognitive integration of content, and how instruction, design, and other resources can support and enhance that integration. Participants will be invited to share experiences, brainstorm, and document how they can apply ideas from the session to their own teaching.
Session Objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe best practices for encouraging student integration of content
- Identify methods of assessing student integration of content
- Create an action plan for implementation of strategies to promote and assess cognitive integration
