Description
Commitment to professional values and behaviors are critical components of a student's professional identity. Lapses in conscientious behaviors in school correlate with USMLE Step 1 scores and future unprofessional behavior. Most medical schools have adopted formal curriculum to teach professionalism; however, methods to identify, evaluate, and remediate lapses in professionalism are inconsistent. Opportunities to identify professional behavior exist in every student activity during each level of training. In this workshop, we will discuss the use of coaching for professionalism lapses at Case Western Reserve University. Remediation through coaching offers students a safe environment for self-reflection, modification of behavior, and personal development of professionalism.

Session Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will:
  1. Identify frequently observed causes for lapses in professionalism in students.
  2. Describe common barriers for remediating lapses in professionalism.
  3. Develop an individualized coaching plan for three different student scenarios.
  4. List useful articles which may promote self-reflection of professional values and behaviors in students.
