Name
Teaching & Learning via Discovery, Elaboration, & Social Construction: The Evolving Role of Faculty
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 11, 2019, 8:15 AM - 9:45 AM
Robert Best Michael Wiederman
Description
The content of the biomedical science curriculum is available to students in multiple formats outside of the classroom.  Accordingly, the role of faculty is evolving away from the presentation of material via lecture, challenging today's faculty to adapt to changing norms for biomedical science instruction.  What will be the primary role of biomedical science faculty of the future?  What value do faculty bring to the learning process?  We will use a series of small- and whole-group discussions to explore these questions, and therein the participants will experience engaged learning with emphasis on discovery, elaboration, and social construction.  Subsequently, participants will be guided through a metacognitive reflection on their experience as learners in this session with respect to their evolving roles as facilitator-coaches in medical education.

Session Objectives:
  1. Articulate the most effective roles of faculty in the learning process (e.g., present content vs. guide learning, structure learning vs. motivate self-determination)
  2. Compare their current faculty roles to those generated as potential ideals
  3. Appraise their experience as learners in the session against the potential roles for faculty who teach in the classroom
