Description
There is a notable decrease in student engagement and attendance across the educational spectrum. Recent literature highlights that even if learners attend sessions, they are often inattentive, distracted and/or superficially engaged, regardless of the adopted active or passive pedagogies.  Explanations for disengagement vary from the depersonalized nature of large group lectures, new technology and the availability of quick and easy access to critical content, student apathy, issues of professionalism, generational and value differences, what some have noted as a decline in respect for authority and institutions, perceptions of formal education as 'boring', and a 'work avoidant' motivational style that fosters 'getting by' while doing as little as possible.  Technology mediated learning (TLM) has been associated with higher levels of student engagement in undergraduate and graduate courses. While there is growing investigative interest in student engagement in TLM formats, it is a relatively new area of focus within medical science education, though results appear promising.  This session is applicable for educators interested in increasing learner's engagement in educational sessions. In this focus session, participants gain information about available technologies and data related to engagement behaviors, and work in small groups to develop plans for using technology to increase student engagement in educational sessions at their own institutions.

Session Objectives:
  1. Discuss the current problem of low learner engagement
  2. Describe technology mediated learning modalities that can be used to improve learner engagement.
  3. Describe a theory of engagement and engagement behaviors
  4. Select modalities to increase learner engagement for a simple or complex teaching concept
  5. Develop ideas for stimulating learner engagement for both the current and future learner and learning environments.
