Name
Embodied Teaching: Active Learning With the Mind and Body
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 11, 2019, 8:15 AM - 9:45 AM
Kelly Quesnelle David Riddle
Description
Teaching that requires students to actively apply their developing knowledge is superior to passive instruction in many contexts. Theories of cognition that are broadly referred to as embodied or embedded cognition suggest that engaging learners physically also may benefit learning. Therefore, adding integrated and congruent physical engagement to active learning to create embodied learning events may be particularly efficacious.

Session Objectives:
  1. Discuss the rationale for embodied teaching: engaging learners physically while they are engaged in active learning
  2. Discuss experiences in implementing embodied teaching in pharmacology and neuroscience
  3. Convert a didactic learning event into an embodied learning event
  4. Summarize benefits and challenges of implementing embodied teaching in a foundational medical science course
