Description
In 2016 the University of KS School of Medicine instigated a new active learning curriculum on all 3 of its campuses called ACE (Active, Competency-driven, Excellence). While the curriculum remains at 4 years duration, the interweaving of basic science and clinical science in the first 2 years is combined with increased active learning in small group settings for activities in 8-week blocks. Between the blocks is a ninth week now called SER week (Scholarship, Enrichment and Remediation). These weeks sit outside the traditional curriculum and are used for independent research, remediation if needed and enrichment experiences, designed to expose students to activities and educational experiences not usually stressed within the core medical school curriculum. Enrichment experiences have specific educational objectives, do not conform to traditional subject matter and are provided in an intentionally low stress format. Examples of enrichments are: teaching of surgical techniques with use of deliberate practice and simulation, clinically based instruction in ophthalmologic instruments, professional money management, aviation safety engineering as it applies to medical procedures, and others. The response to these weeks has been overall very positive. In this focus session we will present the various concepts, challenges, successes and speculate upon the future of this program through 3, ten minute presentations interspersed with longer sessions of audience participation.
Session Objectives:
- Description of enrichment activities for M1 and M2 students
- How to develop educational objective for an enrichment experience
- Discussion of the educational foundation required for an enrichment week
- Defining methods to assess meeting educational objectives in such courses
- Logistics of providing many course options to each student throughout the M1/M2 years.
- Discussion of balance between student driven objectives and faculty driven objectives
