Description

Supporting a geographically dispersed faculty within expansive healthcare systems poses a challenge to implementing effective faculty development programs for undergraduate medical education. However, faculty development is critical to ensure students engage with the material for significant learning. The rationale for this focus session is to demonstrate how we mastered the ambitious goal of uniting a geographically dispersed group of faculty around the common purpose of educational excellence while overcoming isolation. We will explore a systematic 6-fold faculty development approach to ensure results-driven faculty support for clinical faculty teaching in large group sessions. Alternating large and small group discussions utilizing worksheets and checklists, 6 steps will be explored, (1) Foundational Skill Building, (2) Personal Coaching, (3) Incorporating Feedback and Evaluation Data, (4) Continuous Introduction of Teaching Innovations, (5) a System-based Community of Practice, and (6) Educational Onboarding for newly-appointed faculty. Individualized personal consultations, collaborative working relationship, and focus on improvements through a feedback cycle will be discussed. Participants will consider Learning Management Systems and distribution channels to maintain continuous communication. Finally, participants will work through successful faculty development strategies for educators within a large healthcare system and develop institution-specific approaches.
