Description

Purpose.  To study the importance of the Organized Structured Clinical examination (OSCE) and the Progress Testing (PT) in the assessment of academic achievement of medical students in the clerkship of medical courses since such an information is unavailable.  Methods. We did a correlation between the marks obtained by medical students in the clerkship of the 6th year (11th and 12th stages) in OSCE and in PT with those obtained in the written end-unit test of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. The Pearson test was used to establish correlation between variables. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.  Results. The marks of 146 medical students from the second semester of 2014 and the first semester of 2015 were included. The OSCE marks correlated with those of Emergency Medicine (r=0.38; p =0.002), with those of Internal Medicine (r=0.33; p=0.006), with those of Pediatrics (r=0.23, p=0.04), and with those of Surgery (r=0.36, p=0.03). The PT marks correlated with those of Emergency Medicine (r=0.46; p=0.003), with those of Pediatrics (r=0.40; p=0.002), with those of Internal Medicine (r=0.37; p=0.005), and with those of Surgery (r=0.37; p=0.0007).  Conclusions. The marks of OSCE and PT did correlate with those of the end-unit test of curricular units of the clerkship, although the magnitude of PT marks were higher than that observed in the OSCE. Our data also lend support for using both OSCE and PT in the assessment of students in the clerkship of medical courses.
