Implicit bias refers to unconscious but learned beliefs that promote negative associations toward a person or group based on subjective and extraneous characteristics. When not acknowledged and addressed, implicit biases in health care professionals and/or in medical curricula have the potential to perpetuate cultural stereotypes, negatively affect clinical decision-making, and exacerbate health disparities, adversely impacting patient outcomes. This interactive learning session will provide participants with practical guidelines to define implicit bias in the medical curricula; recognize the effects of implicit bias on patient care; identify and acknowledge incidences of implicit biases using case scenarios; utilize tools and strategies to assist medical educators and students in addressing implicit bias; and evaluate the ethnically-related case studies in the curricula via student assessments to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusivity in medical professionalism.
