Integration of design thinking into the health sciences seeks to create a comprehensive environment for the development of nimble, human-centric, solutions-oriented students that are prepared, sought out, and needed for today’s world. Design thinking is a process used to generate insights about human problems to create innovative ways to solve them. It focuses on understanding the world and its problems before finding solutions for them. The five core elements of design thinking include: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Examples of topics that can utilize design thinking include fluency for crucial conversations, medical decision-making, medical ethics, health policy, quality assurance, quality improvement, and medical technology advancements. The purpose of this three-hour workshop is to present innovative ways within medical education to develop graduates who can understand and navigate the complex health care system. Through engaged learning strategies, participants will explore and implement design thinking concepts into their respective disciplines.
