Charissa M. Newkirk, MD is a PGY-1 in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Newkirk received her MD at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and received a Bachelor of Sciences with Honors in Biological Sciences at the University of Chicago.
As a medical student, Dr. Newkirk served as the Vice President for the Gold Humanism Honors Society at OSUCOM and was the first Diversity and Inclusion Chair to be appointed on OSUCOM student council. She co-created and continues to teach the bioethics course Advanced Medical Ethics & Professionalism: The Experience of the Black Person. Dr. Newkirk also was part of the OhioHealth Physician Diversity Scholars program which provided educational enrichment and physician mentorship for underrepresented minority medical students as well as allowed medical students to participate in community outreach in the greater Columbus area.
Dr. Newkirk’s scholarly interests include medical education, health policy, and diversity and inclusion work. She is specifically interested in the intersection of mental health and racial minorities. She is currently interested in pursuing a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry after her residency training.
