Description

Moderated by Michael Herr

Dr. Alison Whelan, Chief Academic Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) will join IAMSE 2024 to deliver the plenary session on the “New Foundational Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education and Proposed Next Steps for Their Actualization.” The AAMC, in collaboration with the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), has spearheaded an initiative to create a common set of foundational competencies for use in undergraduate medical education (UME) programs.

During this session, attendees will learn about the essential and collaborative work the AAMC has carried out aimed at improving the transition to residency for medical students. The new competencies are designed to equip future healthcare professionals with the essential skills and knowledge required for success in residency and beyond. Dr. Whelan will share insights into the collaborative efforts underway to ensure alignment across institutions, to create a shared mental model among educators, and promote a standardized approach to competency assessment and development.

This session offers a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of one of the latest developments in UME and to explore strategies for integrating these new competencies into existing curricula. Whether you are an educator, administrator, or policymaker in the health sciences education sector, this plenary session promises to inspire and inform your work, empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals.
