CANCELED PCWS: Leading for the Future: Values, Mindfulness, and Allyship in Academia
Description

Authentic, effective leaders understand their own values and behave toward others based on those values. Work in authentic leadership has particular relevance for marginalized groups, such as women & underrepresented faculty in academic medicine. The workshop will guide medical educators in developing leadership skills, creating intentional alignment between values & behaviors. Through interactive reflection & activities, participants will identify their lived experiences that contribute to their strengths, and explore leadership areas that need further development. Individually & collectively participants will identify barriers that marginalized groups face when trying to achieve leadership positions and discuss strategies for minimizing these barriers. Intentionally woven in is discussion of "belonging" - and the importance of diversity, equity, & inclusion. Utilizing mindfulness tools/evidence-based strategies, participants will explore how allyship can bolster community and move culture forward; activities will highlight how to avoid ineffective behaviors (i.e., "rescuing"). Participants will be given tools to ignite change and become agentic leaders within their organization. Discussion relevant from classroom level to the Dean's office.
