Name
FS: A Framework for Incorporating Spaced Repetition Tools Into Medical School Curriculum
Description

Session Coordinator: Stefanie Attardi

Space repetition and active recall (SR/AR) techniques are a popular tool for medical students, with the most popular tools having more than 105,000 users1. SR/AR allows students to study topics in the form of flashcards using a spaced repetition algorithm. There are numerous premade cards known as "decks" that can be found online at sites such as Reddit for students to utilize. Though these decks have perceived benefits, content is not reviewed by experts and may deviate from institutional curriculum. As the popularity of SR/AR grows, it is imperative to explore the idea of creating institutionally driven SR/AR decks vetted by content experts and intentionally mapped to the curriculum. Preliminary research shows that SR/AR has proven benefits on students' confidence and enjoyment of study material. The authors assert that by utilizing the student's preferred study tools, educators can increase engagement with and enjoyment of the material.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand what Space repetition and active recall tools (SR/AR) are and how students implement them in their studying.
2. Discuss the stigma of SR/AR in the current academic medicine landscape.
3. Explore how to utilize SR/AR to effectively cover rote memorization material.
4. Discuss how SR/AR intentionally mapped to session objectives can enhance deeper learning and integration of higher order topics.
