The rationale for this focus session is to help biomedical scientists from different health professions create integrated cases covering multiple biomedical science disciplines through storytelling as patients themselves, or someone they know. This not only facilitates a stronger connection between the biomedical science faculty and the students, but also makes the lectures more engaging for student learners with different learning styles. The agenda for the focus session includes a demonstration in a large group setting followed by several small group activities where participants will be encouraged to partner with various disciplines across institutions and create their own integrated cases to assess biomedical sciences and clinical knowledge. The expected outcomes will be that the biomedical sciences faculty from different health professions will have developed an integrated case through storytelling that they can use at their institutions and also be able to overcome any challenges in the development of integrated cases through storytelling.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify and apply the different resources for case creation for Case-Based Learning (CBL) in live sessions.
- Utilize their own personal medical stories, or someone they know, to create integrated cases that cover multiple biomedical science disciplines in CBL.
- Recognize challenges in sharing personal medical experiences in the development and delivery of integrated cases and devise ways to address those challenges.
