Description
PURPOSE
Many health professions educators enter teaching roles with limited formal
training in educational theory, curriculum design, and assessment. To bridge
this gap, the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE)
launched the Manuals series to offer concise, practical, and evidence-based
“how-to” guides for faculty development in 2021. Since then, the series has
expanded rapidly. Here, we describe the structure, pedagogical principles,
and impact of the Manuals series as a global development resource for health
professions educators.
METHODS
IAMSE Manuals are designed as workshop-style guides grounded in adult
learning theory, visual learning theory, and cognitive load principles. Each
chapter includes SMART learning objectives, clearly structured sections,
real-world cases, and practical tools such as tables, flowcharts, checklists,
and step-by-step implementation strategies. Across volumes, the Manual
provides detailed guidelines for readability, ethical use of AI, and
operational consistency. Authors are encouraged to create internationally
relevant content, emphasize actionable practices, and include
faculty-development features such as activities, templates, and roadmaps.
Editorial review is conducted by the Manuals Board to ensure cohesion,
clarity, and alignment with IAMSE standards.
RESULTS
Since 2021, 10 IAMSE Manuals have been published, covering topics including
professionalism, assessment, instructional methods, student support, and
faculty development. Five additional Manuals are currently in active
development, reflecting sustained global interest and a growing pipeline of
proposals. Feedback from authors and users highlights clarity, practicality,
and visual design as major strengths. Many institutions report incorporating
the Manuals into their programs.
CONCLUSION
IAMSE Manuals series provides a scalable, internationally applicable model
for elevating the educational skills of health professions educators. By
offering structured, visually rich, and implementation-ready guidance, the
Manuals address critical gaps in educator preparation and support a global
community committed to improving teaching, learning, and curriculum design.
Continued expansion of the series is expected to further strengthen
educational excellence across the health professions.
