Ignite Talk: Teaching in the Age of Online Resources: Designing Lesson Plans to Enhance the Value of In-Person Classroom Learning
Date & Time
Friday, October 20, 2023, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Description

With many accessible popular online educational resources, educators find it challenging to engage students in traditional classroom sessions. We will review and practice a pedagogic framework for making classroom sessions both engaging, invaluable, and irreplaceable.

Many high-quality online multimedia resources have become available for medical students to learn basic and clinical science content. As a result, medical educators are faced with the question, “What can we do during synchronous classroom or virtual sessions that cannot be replaced by these online resources?” Having faculty in students together for a period of 1 or more hours is a huge opportunity cost that should not be ignored. In this Ignite session, using the framework of Content and Pedagogy Knowledge, we will review a strategy for identifying content and developing lesson plans that help educators answer this question. Participants will practice applying this strategy to classes that they teach and share their ideas with other participants.
