Description

Background
Despite the efforts of the Sustainable Development Goals to reduce health inequities, they remain a persistent global challenge. Although structural barriers are well recognized, the influence of healthcare providers’ attitudes and behaviors is often underestimated. Unconscious biases can shape clinical decision-making that often results in discrimination and unequal health care.

Purpose
The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence of unconscious biases among health science students and to explore their responses when confronting and reflecting on their own biases. By fostering awareness and critical reflection, the study strives to contribute to the development of more equitable and respectful healthcare professionals.

Methods
A 2-hour awareness-raising lecture was delivered, followed by the application of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and a mixed-methods questionnaire to capture students’ cognitive and emotional responses to their results.

Results
Results indicated a widespread presence of biases toward the social majorities. Shared emotional responses included surprise, discomfort, and the acknowledgment of bias patterns within their academic and clinical settings.

Conclusion
Targeted, brief educational interventions can foster meaningful self-reflection among health sciences students and generate the groundwork for healthcare professionals who are self-aware, critically reflective, and committed to equity-oriented practice.
