Description

Learning Objectives:
-Describe an interprofessional curriculum designed to increase healthcare career awareness among high school students.
-Identify assessment strategies used to evaluate the curriculum’s effectiveness.

Purpose
This session presents an interprofessional healthcare pathway curriculum aimed at expanding access to healthcare careers for high school students and outlines the assessment methods used to measure program impact.

Methods
The 4-year curriculum introduces high school students to a range of healthcare careers through scaffolded, hands-on learning experiences. Students’ progress from foundational exposure to advanced engagement, culminating in a year-long internship. Undergraduate and graduate students from healthcare disciplines co-develop and deliver the curriculum, serve as mentors, and participate in a companion course focused on health disparities, curriculum development, and teamwork. Assessment strategies include pre/post surveys, reflective journals, mentor evaluations, and longitudinal tracking of student engagement and academic progression.

Results
106 high school students gain knowledge and exposure to the profession, including community impact. High school students build long-term relationships with mentors, learn how to navigate higher education systems, and how to access educational resources. Students deepen their understanding of different healthcare professions, interprofessional healthcare collaborations, and widen their perspectives on health career opportunities. Assessment data are used to refine curricular content, improve mentor training, and strengthen community partnerships.

Conclusion
This interprofessional, community-based model effectively broadens access to healthcare careers and supports the development of future professionals. Structured assessments ensure alignment with learning goals and promote continuous improvement in health professions education.
