Description
The SBI Peer Feedback Tutor is an AI-driven educational tool designed to promote learner success in medical education. Through five interactive scenarios, the tutor helps students master the Situation-Behavior-Impact (SBI) model and craft feedback statements that meet a standardized rubric’s “Good” performance standard. By balancing rigorous professional expectations with psychological safety, the tutor creates a warm, encouraging, and collaborative environment where students can practice and strengthen this essential professional skill.
This session will demonstrate the SBI Peer Feedback Tutor, including how it was developed, implemented, and used in medical education. Attendees will have the opportunity to evaluate the tool and consider how it could be adapted at their own medical schools to support structured, effective instruction in peer feedback.
While peer feedback is a cornerstone of collaborative medical learning, often cited for its educational benefits, formal, standardized instruction in these methods remains rare. Recognizing that providing constructive, objective feedback is a complex professional activity mandated by LCME, COCA, and ACGME Interpersonal and Communication Skills competency standards, this tool offers a formative pathway for development. By utilizing the SBI model, the tutor helps students separate observable actions from personal character, minimizing defensiveness and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This approach directly supports the forum's theme by providing a structured, supportive method for students to develop the feedback skills necessary for lifelong professional growth.
