Description
Background: As the healthcare field steps into the era of Artificial Intelligence, there is a pressing need for competent and responsible use of AI in health professions education. The onus is on medical educators to not only master this modern skill set but also transfer these contemporary skills to their students in health professions. However, the scholarly works are deficient in the viewpoints of medical educators on the use of AI in medical education and its implications. To this end, we aimed to understand the benefits and challenges of using AI in medical education through the lens of medical educators.
Method: This qualitative study was conducted at Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Tamil Nadu, India. The participants were recruited via purposive sampling to include diverse and representative group of medical educators. Focus group discussion and semi – structured interviews were conducted. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis with the interview transcripts to identify key patterns and insights.
Results: The findings were both illuminating and encouraging. Innovative teaching strategies, enhanced learning experience, personalisation of learning, collaborative learning opportunities and knowledge sharing were perceived as benefits, while lack of training, accessibility, technical incompetence, data privacy and security were viewed as potential challenges to the integration of ChatGPT in medical education.
Conclusion: The incorporation of AI into medical education holds the potential to cultivate an educational ecosystem that is not only fosters innovation but also committed to the core principles of effective and responsible medical education. Our exploratory session serves as a stepping stone, initiating a scholarly discourse setting the stage for an iterative exploration and innovation.
