Name
Workshop: Dynamics of Collaborative Leadership in Team Science: Three Frameworks
Date
Monday, July 24, 2023
Time
1:45 PM - 3:15 PM (EDT)
Description

The overarching goal of this workshop is to share three conceptual frameworks and three facilitation tools to operationalize collaborative leadership as iterative cycles of distributed sense making, decision making and action taking. Most cross-disciplinary science teams aspire to practice collaborative leadership, but lack systemic approaches to operationalize this leadership style. This is especially challenging given that most cross-disciplinary science teams are embedded in higher education institutes where collaborative leadership is not the norm.

The specific objectives and outcomes include:

  • Objective #1: Introduce three pitfalls cross-disciplinary science teams are prone to in practicing collaborative leadership
    • Outcome #1: Participants will understand the three pitfalls
    • Outcome #2: Participants will relate to the three pitfalls from their individual contexts
    • Outcome #3: Participants will crowdsource more pitfalls and challenges in practicing collaborative leadership.
  • Objective #2: Introduce the Theory U, Divergence-Convergence Diamond and Strategic Doing frameworks and related applications in team science leadership
    • Outcome #1: Participants will understand the conceptual underpinnings of the three frameworks
    • Outcome #2: Participants will relate these three conceptual frameworks to the dynamics of sense making, decision making and action taking in team science
    • Outcome #3: Participants will relate the three conceptual frameworks to the three pitfalls.
  • Objective #3: Introduce implications of the three conceptual frameworks
    • Outcome #1: Participants will be familiar with implications from the workshop instructor’s team science practice
    • Outcome #2: Participants will be invited to crowdsource implications and practices from their own contexts
    • Outcome #3: Participants will understand a successful case study applying concepts above.
  • Objective #4:Introduce three facilitation tools to practice collaborative leadership
    • Outcome #1: Participants will be familiar with the three facilitation tools
    • Outcome #2: Participants will apply these three tools with scenarios
