Description

Interdisciplinary scientific collaboration is necessary to address today’s most pressing societal challenges. However while scientific expertise has substantially improved, few members of the research community have been trained in effective teaming. The lack of attention to the collaboration aspects of scientific projects is surprising given that effective teaming is a significant predictor for research productively, job satisfaction, and career advancement. CCTSI offers an asynchronous teaming 101 courses and six two-hour synchronous interactive team science workshops on Zoom. This paper uses pre and post program survey data from two years and over 100 participants. We find that participants increased their familiarity, confidence, and use of several team science strategies after completing the workshop series. Participants reported greater understanding of all aspects of teaming including creating team charters, building a shared language, acknowledging and including diversity, and monitoring progress and benchmarks. Our findings suggest that virtual, interactive workshops can increase specific team science competencies.
