Description

“The Sage on the Stage;” this is what many large lectures end up becoming, even though many of us aspire to make an engaging, fun, and fruitful learning environment. How can we change the way that we teach these large, diverse, agricultural lectures to be what we dream? Where do we go wrong, and why? One of the reasons for this is that overall, large lectures are overwhelming, and as instructors, we often don’t know where to start! Yet, the ways that we can make a more engaging environment leads to increases in learning, retention, and overall satisfaction for our students. The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to inclusive interactive tools, tips, and tricks of teaching a diverse, large agricultural lecture, meant to increase engagement with the students, and decrease your overall workload by streamlining. The first part of our workshop will focus on the top tools that are most useful in a large, diverse classroom setting, which include iClicker, Remind, Padlet, Online Question and Answer, Kahoot! and Factile. During the workshop, participants will have access to an online learning platform (Brightspace), where they will be able to experience these learning technologies in a fun, inclusive, and low-stress environment. With both the perspective of an instructor and student, participants will be able to test out the tools, and see how to utilize these tools as an instructional designer in overall course design. Tools are one facet of the experience! The second part of our workshop is to take our tools and integrate them to promote an inclusive learning environment of diverse, agricultural students. Learning environments of variety of formats will be included. Fostering an inclusive environment where “diversity is valued and integrated” is of upmost importance in teaching large, diverse, agricultural classes, and our 2023 NACTA host institution, Ohio State ATI, sets the standard with its own Principles of Community for the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
