Jenelle Robinson - Prairie View A & M University

This interactive workshop will explore the innovative use of spoken word poetry, Hip-Hop, and storytelling as culturally relevant pedagogical tools for teaching concepts in applied scientific disciplines, particularly in nutritional and life sciences. Our primary goals are to demonstrate how these creative methods can engage students, enhance understanding, and address the specific needs of underserved populations. By incorporating culturally relevant pedagogy, educators can better connect with diverse student backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Participants will engage in hands-on activities, including crafting their own poems, raps, and short stories related to scientific topics, allowing them to express their understanding creatively and personally. We will also explore performing arts videos that illustrate effective integration of these art forms in education, providing practical examples for participants to implement in their own classrooms. This experiential approach not only enriches the learning experience but also empowers educators to find and amplify their unique voices within the educational landscape.
This workshop aligns with NACTA’s mission to promote instructional excellence and improve post-secondary teaching practices in agriculture and related disciplines. By facilitating discussions on innovative teaching strategies and fostering collaboration among educators, we aim to equip participants with the tools and inspiration needed to create dynamic and engaging learning experiences in their own classrooms.
