Description

This qualitative case study explored the perceptions of seven high-achieving animal science undergraduate students as they navigated their academic paths and application process to veterinary school. Using resiliency theory as the theoretical framework, the study involved interviews, observations, and field notes. Through open coding, axial coding, and reflective memos, three major themes emerged: engaging purposefully, despairing perfectionism, and wearing masks. As these students prepare to enter a profession with a well-documented mental health crisis, including a high suicide rate, understanding their undergraduate experiences becomes crucial. Numerous studies have focused on veterinary school students and the profession itself, however, little research exists on the undergraduate population pursuing this degree. Given the high suicide rates within the veterinary profession, it is vital to shift focus and study those preparing to apply to veterinary school.

Though this case study’s findings cannot be generalized to a broader population due to its limited scope, it highlights an important gap in the literature and calls for further research into the experiences and challenges faced by undergraduate students in this field. Continued exploration in this area is needed to inform effective advising practices and better support students in their journey toward veterinary school.

From the findings, it is recommended that a proactive or intrusive advising approach be taken with this student population. While this advising practice is often linked to supporting at-risk students and enhancing retention, high-achieving students may also face unique challenges and risks that are not immediately apparent. By adopting a personalized advising approach, advisors can gain a deeper understanding of each student as an individual. Additionally, the replication of this case study on students with similar characteristics from other majors will help researchers gain added insights into the pursuit of veterinary medicine.
