Description

This study is a five-year national projection of employment opportunities for college graduates (2-year through graduate degree) in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources, and the environment (FARNRE). This is the tenth edition of a series of widely utilized reports dating back to 1980 providing a primary source of supply and demand data for jobs in the food, agriculture, and natural resources (FANR) disciplines. This report identifies specific needs for the FANR workforce in public and private sectors and is extensively used by USDA, NIFA, university, industry, non-governmental organization representatives, and other stakeholders. The five-year employment outlook for graduates and jobs in FARNRE supports decision-making in government regarding funding and partnership opportunities, in academe for faculty and degree program development and enhancement, and in industry and non-profit organizations for internships and experiential learning opportunities, resulting in a more career-ready workforce. Employment opportunities for college graduates with expertise in FARNRE are based upon ten-year occupational projections maintained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Web-scrape data on demand for graduates in these fields is also used. Classification of Instruction Programs (CIPS) codes, graduation data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) within the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) of the U.S. Department of Education, and enrollment data compiled by the Food and Agricultural Education Information System (FAEIS) are utilized to determine the number of graduates available to fill jobs in the FARNRE fields. Employer demand for college graduates with degrees in FARNRE disciplines will exceed the number of graduates earning FARNRE degrees. Approximately 104,000 openings annually will exist, with only 71% of these being filled by the number of FARNRE program graduates. Focused cluster areas for demand and supply of graduates are further estimated and discussed.
