Interest in the agricultural industry is essential while pursuing a degree in agricultural-related sciences. Careers within agricultural sciences are diverse and capture various students’ interests. Given the need for students to fill jobs in the agricultural industry, this data will broaden our understanding of students’ perspectives on the supports and barriers to completing a degree in CFAES to fill the demand for those jobs. The purpose of this study was to examine the support and barriers to career choice of first-year college students enrolled in [College of Agriculture] at [University]. The research questions were: (1) What are the academic and coping self-efficacy, outcome expectations, academic interest, educational goals, and supports and barriers of CFAES students? This study was framed by Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), which connects self-efficacy and outcome expectations to developing personal career interests. A Qualtrics survey instrument was distributed to first-year students enrolled in a college-wide survey course in the autumn of 2024. Respondents indicated a fair amount of confidence in completing a degree in their major with a B or better GPA. They indicated moderate confidence in managing challenges within [College of Agriculture]. Respondents agreed strongly (M = 4.23) that graduating from [College of Agriculture] would lead to positive outcomes and strongly committed to continuing and graduating from college (M = 4.55). Students found it moderately likely (M = 3.93) that close friends, relatives, and important people in their lives would support their decision to pursue a [College of Agriculture] major, while most felt it unlikely (M = 1.45) that they would face significant barriers. These findings indicate that most first-year [College of Agriculture] students in autumn 2024 have positive self-efficacy and outcome expectations for their future careers and college experiences.
