Description

High-impact educational practices are associated with transformational learning and increased student engagement, retention, and academic success. Many universities and colleges of agriculture include high-impact outcomes in their strategic plans to help enhance retention and graduation rates of all students. Global resource systems (GRS) is a primary undergraduate major at Iowa State University (ISU) that has engaged in significant high-impact practices since the major started in 2009. GRS majors learn how the world uses its limited resources, including food and agriculture, and to plan and create sustainable resource systems through innovative approaches. They complete a curriculum designed to integrate high-impact practices, which are intentionally embedded in required courses and that provide personalized learning for students. Curricular requirements include a global internship, undergraduate research, a second major or minor, and a capstone team project. The global internship emphasizes a student’s area of specialization as well as an immersive cross-cultural experience. Undergraduate research is completed at the senior level and students share their scholarship in a report and poster presentation. A team-based capstone course includes a project with a real-world, global client, resulting in final products to meet client needs. Additional high-impact practices that assist in retention and engagement include a GLOBE learning community and extracurricular clubs and programs, including the ISU Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program. ISU’s main and satellite campuses in Iowa, Uganda, and the U.S. Virgin Islands provide opportunities for service-learning programs and study abroad, which are considered high-impact practices. Leadership skills are enhanced through a leadership seminar and additional academy. The high-impact curriculum attracts a new student population to ISU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Over 320 alumni successfully completed the curriculum, with a 97% placement in agriculture and food businesses, nongovernmental organizations, graduate and professional schools, and governmental and educational institutions.
