The high prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the growing number of traumatic events—further exacerbated by the global pandemic—have profound implications for college students' well-being and academic success. Research shows that between 66% and 94% of college students report experiencing at least one traumatic event during their lifetime. The 2024 National College Health Assessment, conducted by the American College Health Association including over 150 institutions, reveals alarming statistics: 77% of undergraduate student respondents experienced moderate or high levels of stress and 28% of students were positive on the suicidal screening. In addition, 25% of students reported the death of a family member or someone close to them and 50% of students reported challenges with their finances in the last 12 months.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for higher education institutions to implement trauma-informed practices that can support students in overcoming these challenges. Instructors are uniquely positioned to make a positive impact, creating environments that not only foster learning but also promote healing and resilience. A trauma-informed approach to higher education emphasizes understanding the effects of trauma on students and integrating classroom practices that are sensitive to their emotional and psychological needs.
This session will explore how trauma affects students’ learning, behaviors, and relationships, and how instructors can contribute to their success. Practical, day-to-day actionable strategies will be shared to help instructors recognize the signs of trauma, provide support, and create an environment that encourages growth and academic achievement. Resources for addressing student needs and trauma-informed pedagogical approaches will be provided to empower instructors in fostering an inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
