Description

This study examined the use of group exams as a teaching practice in an undergraduate leadership theory course to enhance content comprehension and improve student outcomes. Group exams were implemented across three assessments, each consisting of an individual exam followed by a group exam, with the final score calculated as the average of the two. The group exam format varied for each assessment: Exam 1 used randomly assigned groups, Exam 2 allowed students to self-select their groups, and Exam 3 gave students the option to self-select their groups or opt out of the group exam entirely. Exam 1 revealed that 80% (n=20) of students experienced improved grades from the group exam, with 72% (n=18) reporting enhanced comprehension. By Exam 2, 84% (n=21) noted grade improvement, while 88% (n=22) credited the group exam with better understanding. Students valued the ability to self-select group members, citing familiarity (n=16), personal relationships (n=15), and peers’ understanding of material (n=13) as primary criteria. For Exam 3, 80% (n=20) said self-selection positively impacted their scores, and fewer challenges were reported compared to Exam 2. On average, students performed worst on Exam 1 and best on Exam 2, aligning with a gradual increase in confidence across exams. From an instructional perspective, these findings underscore the value of group exams for promoting collaboration and comprehension, particularly when students can choose their peers. To implement this practice effectively, educators should consider providing clear expectations for group dynamics, offering students opportunities to practice collaborative problem-solving, and integrating reflection activities post-exam. While group exams improve grades and comprehension, their influence on study habits appears limited. This adaptable approach offers a foundation for instructors to integrate group exams in diverse disciplines, supporting both academic achievement and interpersonal skill development while fostering a learner-centered classroom environment.
