Communities of Practice (CoP) are groups of people who share common interests and a passion for learning through regular interaction. The CoP concept is an age-old practice (e.g., indigenous knowledge to survive harsh climates), but its usage was popularized among educators as a “knowing and learning” collective for professionals in a shared domain, such as the agricultural sciences. Information technologies facilitate CoP formation, participation, and evaluation of learning. We developed a digital CoP for USDA-funded projects in the Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) program in January 2024. The National REEU-ECN (Education Coordinated Network) CoP promotes collaboration between REEU project directors (PDs) to accomplish REEU program objectives and flatten learning curves. The objective of this presentation is to discuss strategies and tools to develop and sustain a digital CoP for agricultural postsecondary programs. The National REEU-ECN facilitates program administration, enhances PDs’ collaboration, improves REEU students’ science communication skills, and promotes REEU opportunities in 50+ programs nationwide. These outcomes are achieved through the USDA-REEU SharePoint private network, which launched on March 28, 2024. By the end of 2024, more than 3,200 visitors accessed the digital CoP. Office365 applications provide no-cost private communications (administrators and CoP advisory board members) and member email lists. The public facing website, REEU-ECN: The FANH Scientists Network was launched in tandem with the private CoP. The public site promotes REEU projects, PDs, workshops, publications, news, and resources. Since its launch, more than 3,500 pageviews have been logged in 1,876 sessions. New/returning visitors were from USA, China, Australia, and Germany. Top referrals came from usda.gov and google.com. Lessons learned from establishing and maintaining a digital CoP, as well as project resources, will be shared in the presentation.
