Description

Digital resources like podcasts can enhance students' learning in agricultural communications courses. This study evaluated evaluate and compare learning from podcasts versus traditional learning techniques in an agricultural communications undergraduate course, also it sought to compare learning techniques performance by gender, and topic reviewed in classes. This study used the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) to explore how podcasts can enhance learning. CTML is based on human information processing, limited capacity, and active learning principles. A descriptive, comparative, quantitative analysis was used to evaluate the performance of podcasts in an agricultural communications course. To evaluate this multimedia tool, students (N = 28) took two exams and the results were analyzed using SPSS. The study found that the students performed better on exams when learning with traditional techniques rather than podcasts. Also, there were no significant differences in the performance of podcasts between male and female students. Additionally, only two of the six units covered in the exams had significant differences between the learning tools, where podcasts performed lower than traditional lectures. The study's findings suggest that podcasts can be an effective learning tool but are not as effective as traditional techniques. This is likely because ensuring that students listen to the entire podcast episode can be difficult. Additionally, students may prefer certain topics and are more likely to pay attention to podcasts that cover their interests. The researchers recommend that further research be conducted to assess the effectiveness of podcasts and using a qualitative approach to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact this tool has in classrooms. They also recommend that educators develop strategies to ensure students listen to podcasts and evaluate which strategies improve their exam performance. This study can be done in other discipline courses to evaluate the implementation of podcasts as a learning tool.
