DigiMapping: Field Teaching with Spatial Information on the Go
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 3, 2025, 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Description

A mobile technology tool was developed and used in fields to teach undergraduate students about the spatial contexts of soils, vegetation, hydrology, and landscapes. This tool was called DigiMapping because it integrates digital maps in portable tablet devices. This system also included a local server network for wireless connectivity with a 500-m radius coverage as well as interactive forms to compile the work done by students into summary tables. We used DigiMapping to teach in the Field Schools for Environmental & Conservation Sciences and Forestry - course REN R 290 at University of Alberta. This teaching has taken place in field sites within Alberta, such as Lac LaBiche, Woodbend, and Cynthia. The annual enrolment in REN R 290 is between 70 and 110 undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds. Students work in small groups of 4 or 5. Anecdotally, students have shared verbal appraisals of how excellent DigiMapping is when interacting and learning in the field. We gathered written feedback and the vast majority was very positive. Students wrote: “It’s easy and it’s convenient,” “It’s a well-thought-out idea,” “Intuitive, simple, fast, access to critical information,” and “Handy to use it from the beginning.” Additionally, we recorded that 93% of the students’ teams reached learning proficiency when answering and completing problems using DigiMapping. By automatically integrating student answers of into summary tables, the instructors were able to gather, share, and discuss the outcomes of the exercises with the whole class directly in the field. A plethora of benefits unfolds from this teaching effort, including experiential learning, applying previous knowledge and relevant skills, digital literacy, and career readiness. Designing and implementing student-centered learning that uses flexible and interactive mobile approaches encourages and accomplishes unique engagement and collaboration while supporting the effective education of future professionals in agriculture, forestry, land reclamation and natural resources.
