This presentation will reflect on a workshop offered at the 2024 Pennsylvania 4-H State Leadership Conference, which provides 4-H youth an opportunity to build and perfect skills that can be used throughout their lives. Throughout the conference, teens from across PA participated in workshops related to leadership skills. In this presentation, we will discuss the purpose and details of the workshop, general reflections by the workshop presenters, participant feedback, and recommendations for future workshops. The goal of the workshop, titled “Communication in Agricultural Careers,” was to enhance communication skills in the context of agricultural careers, enabling participants to better engage with diverse audiences in their future professional lives. Participants were engaged in methods for identifying and describing their target audience, formulating an effective message for this audience, and identifying effective and ineffective messaging. Student participants were teens (ages 13-18) actively enrolled in the Pennsylvania 4-H program, and 97 participants attended one of the three workshop sessions. The description for this workshop catered to this audience and read: “Being a good communicator is important in any career you may pursue. Learn how to be an excellent communicator by stepping into your audience’s shoes to create effective messages. This workshop will cover techniques for analyzing your target audience and crafting a message that speaks to their needs”. Facilitators implemented hands-on practice during the workshop and utilized real-world examples to foster meaningful learning. Post-workshop feedback from participants highlighted an increased understanding of the communication strategies discussed and a higher confidence level in their ability to act as a leader. Recommendations for future workshops include providing more time for practice scenarios, integrating peer feedback sessions, and offering follow-up resources for continued skill development. In conclusion, this workshop successfully met its objective of helping teens develop essential communication skills for agricultural careers.
