Plan for Success: A Research Planning Sheet for Organizing Graduate and Undergraduate Research Efforts
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 3, 2025, 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Description

Research is a necessary skill in today’s agricultural, food, and natural resource industry. Research skills are encouraged in undergraduate students and are fostered through higher education programs at the master’s and doctoral level. These efforts mean that faculty members often assist with multiple research projects at various levels, alongside their own work. To ensure deadlines are met and research quality remains high, it is important for faculty and students to organize their research work for streamlined efforts. To assist with this organization, we developed a research project planning sheet to be implemented during any research phase. Ideally, the sheet is used at the start of a research project as the planning sheet is designed to provide a clear outline and overview of each research project with details to help align goals and timelines of work. Individual sections are customized to aid in the documentation of funding sources, time allocations, and research partners. A section for brainstorming desired publishing outlets helps ensure timely research dissemination and communication. We implemented this sheet in an independent study and graduate research assistant capacity using personal binders to help organize projects in various stages. Sheets were reviewed at the start of meetings to revisit past notes and plan next steps. Overall, the added practice of organization streamlined research mentorship meetings and resulted in faster project completion for research abstracts. Additionally, effective project management and technical skills are practiced for successful careers in the agricultural, food, and natural resource industry. In the future, this organizational tool can be used in undergraduate research courses to further develop the tool and meet needs based on various institutions. While helping undergraduates navigate research in various stages, it also assists faculty mentors in balancing multiple projects for improved capacity.
