Description

As part of a USDA grant project, [TITLE], students were selected for two-year cohorts. The first year of the project included participation in an international experiential learning trip. The following year students were assigned various research internships for the Summer. All students participated in a showcase where they exhibited their projects and reflected on their experiences. Using semi structured interviews (n = 31), students were asked to reflect on their growth after participation in the internship program. The students answered questions related to their experience and how it affected them personally and professionally. This descriptive study was conducted at [UNIVERSITY], a southern Hispanic Serving Institution. The feedback from participants highlighted the significant impact of the showcase on both their professional and personal growth. Many reported substantial improvements in their public speaking ability and professional communication. They noted that the event helped them feel more comfortable and confident when addressing diverse audiences. Additionally, participants highlighted the importance of teamwork and leadership. This included the opportunity to expand their networks by building connections with peers and faculty. The showcase helped participants clarify their career goals by reflecting on their passions and how to align them with future professional opportunities. The experience encouraged participants to step outside their comfort zones, overcoming the fear of public speaking. Many reported increased self-assurance in presenting their ideas and maintaining composure in front of audiences. Participants emphasized the value of reflection, as the showcase provided an opportunity to appreciate their personal growth and assess the impact of their experiences. Overall, the career/research showcase served as a transformative experience for participants, blending professional development with personal growth. By fostering essential skills, boosting confidence, and providing a platform for meaningful reflection, the program left participants better prepared for future career challenges.
