Description

Many educational concepts have helped mold the modern agricultural education classroom. There is an increasing number of preservice teachers with a limited background in many traditional agricultural mechanics topics. Research has shown that Experiential Learning Theory helps students gain a better understanding of the curriculum being taught which in turn will lead to them being better informed and prepared teachers. This presentation will detail how this idea was used in planning an Introduction to Agricultural Mechanics course for pre-service agricultural education students. Students enrolled in the class were given opportunities to interact with a variety of concepts including; building layout and construction, electrical wiring, hand/power tool identification and usage, basic project design and wood construction, project finishing, small engines, plumbing, and welding. Participants were asked to design and build their own “Teaching Tool Box”. This included purchasing the material needed to construct and finish their box. This project incorporated many aspects of the class and provided the students with a “take home” item that they could use in their teaching career. As topics were introduced throughout the semester, students participated in various learning activities, which included field trips, guest speaker interactions, and interviews. At the end of each unit, students were provided with examples of various items to add to their box. The project was well received by the students as reflected in anecdotal interviews and comments. Changes for the next semester include; adding more lab time, allowing students to alter the basic size of the box and increasing the scope of topics discussed.
