Description
Strong professional communities depend on members who are ethically grounded, procedurally fluent, and capable of leading with clarity and confidence. Yet, many educators and organizational leaders enter governance roles without intentional preparation. This 90-minute, highly interactive workshop—Rules, Roles, and Real Impact—engages agricultural educators and professionals in applied governance skill-building to strengthen leadership, collaboration, and organizational culture.
Participants will engage in structured, hands-on exercises addressing three key learning objectives:
1) Discuss the fiduciary duties of members within an organization—exploring the responsibilities of care, loyalty, and obedience that guide ethical and effective leadership.
2) Differentiate governing documents within academic and professional contexts—examining constitutions, bylaws, standing rules, rules of order, and customs to clarify their authority and appropriate use.
3) Implement effective meeting agendas that align with governing structures—designing and evaluating agendas that support productive, inclusive, and mission-aligned meetings.
Examples will be drawn from a range of academic institutions and professional organizations, and participants will be encouraged to bring governing documents or applied case situations from their own lived experiences to enrich conversation and collaborative problem-solving.
This workshop is facilitated by Dr. Daniel Foster, who has served as the NACTA Parliamentarian for eight years. He also serves other national agricultural education organizations (AAAE, NAAE) and is a parliamentarian for both the Penn State University Faculty Senate and his college faculty organization. As principal of Beyond the Gavel, LLC, Dr. Foster provides parliamentary education and support and holds credentials in multiple parliamentary authorities and organizations. He brings over 20 years of experience helping clients and institutions navigate complex governance challenges with confidence and clarity.
