Description
Developing leadership capacity in students is no longer optional - it’s essential for workforce / career readiness and lifelong success. Employers consistently rank composites of leadership including communication, collaboration, ethical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking among the most valued skills. These are crucial for building confidence, personal growth, academic success, and career advancement. Leadership skills help students excel academically, stand out to employers by demonstrating responsibility and teamwork, and fosters a sense of purpose and connection on one's campus. These same competencies lie at the heart of NACTA’s mission to advance excellence in teaching and learning across agricultural disciplines. This highly interactive, skill-building workshop immerses educator attendees in proven strategies for embedding leadership development directly into course content, not as an add-on. Participants will actively engage in case-based analyses and small-group simulations that model real-world leadership behaviors and practices, specifically emphasizing examples of building a shared vision and mission, preparing for crucial conversations, giving and receiving feedback effectively, strengthening team collaboration and project follow-through concepts, and making ethical, values-driven decisions. Using a mix of experiential learning, design thinking, and guided reflection, attendees will: identify core leadership competencies relevant to their own teaching contexts; practice facilitation techniques that cultivate emotional intelligence, trust, and accountability in students; design an actionable plan to integrate leadership-infused activities or assignments into existing courses; and network with NACTA colleagues to spark collaboration and potential SoTL outcomes. The session combines short, high-energy teaching demonstrations with rotating interactive breakout experiences plus think-pair-share exercises. Participants will have opportunity co-create a personalized “Leadership Integration Blueprint” (a structured, intentional framework designed to guide how an individuals lead themselves or how courses and programs can integrate and develop leadership skills) and leave better equipped with classroom-ready exercises and assessment ideas that translate leadership principles into practice. By blending insight, interaction, and inspiration, this workshop empowers educators to develop leadership through learning experiences, preparing students to lead with confidence and integrity in their academic, professional, and community endeavors. Join us to discover innovative, adaptable ways to elevate, integrate leadership development into any course and to experience firsthand how cultivating leadership in the classroom fulfills NACTA’s vision for transformative, high-impact education.
