Name
Student Interest and Industry Perspective on Agricultural Communication Skills
Date & Time

Description

Communication is a necessary skill regardless of the industry a student chooses to pursue. While agriculture is typically viewed as farming or working with animals, agricultural communication is as important, or potentially more important than in other industries that are more clearly defined to the public. This study sought to understand the skills and knowledge students desire and need to learn in an Agricultural Communications program. To understand the student perspective, we surveyed undergraduate students in an agricultural college and high school students on skills and courses of interest, the format they would prefer to learn in, type of program they would be interested in completing, and if they would participate in an internship. We also surveyed industry professionals to understand what kind of skills they expect to see from Agricultural Communications graduates. Participants in this study were recruited through three separate listservs. One for undergraduate students, another for high school teachers to share with their students, and the last went directly to industry professionals who signed up for a university listserv. Results were similar regarding the undergraduate and high school students desired skills with the highest responses on public speaking, social skills, and science communication, but there was a clear difference in the courses they thought would be most valuable and if they would be willing to participate in an internship related to agricultural communication. Industry perspective mostly aligned with student desired skills and believed that internships or experiential learning are important for students before they enter the workforce. Through open-ended questions, industry professionals described communication graduates as needing to be self-driven, well versed in social media, and updated on new technology. We recommend universities building Agricultural Communications programs focus on courses that teach skills like public speaking, social media, and technology like podcasting and virtual reality.
