University hosts a Career Development Event (CDE) for FFA members statewide focusing on Sustainable Agriculture principles and practices. The objectives of this presentation are to introduce college and university educators to this event, familiarize them with the rules and resources, and discuss challenges and opportunities associated with hosting the event. Career Development Events foster skill development, critical thinking, and broader understanding of concepts and practices associated with a specific area of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. The Sustainable Agriculture CDE, like those adopted by state and national FFA organizations, is intended to create greater interest in careers and further study in the field. Additionally, the CDE serves as a means to increase school-based agricultural education teachers’ interest in Sustainable Agriculture and potentially include more of these concepts and practices in their instruction. Preparation of students for other CDEs such as livestock, dairy, and poultry judging as well as floriculture and farm business management has increased teacher interest and expertise and student career interest in those fields. An overview of participation during the past four years and a comparison of participating schools from rural and urban areas will be included. We hope this presentation will create interest with other college and university faculty in hosting a Sustainable Agriculture CDE.
