Description

Capstone courses are utilized across many educational fields, providing a culminating opportunity for students to synthesize information while applying skills and concepts learned throughout their educational experience. [Course] is a capstone course for [major] seniors, enrolled in the multidisciplinary option at [University]. The multidisciplinary option within the [degree] program was formally offered in 2021 and was developed to provide students flexibility in their education through three student-selected emphasis areas. Complimenting core and required courses, each emphasis area consists of 15 credit hours with a minimum of 6 credits at the 3000-4000 level. Common emphasis areas include but are not limited to agricultural business, agronomy, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and international agriculture. [Degree] multidisciplinary students take courses aligned within their emphasis areas, gaining relevant knowledge and experience. While developing the multidisciplinary option, the need for a capstone course to serve graduating seniors was recognized and first formally offered as an experimental course in the fall of 2022. The [course] capstone course now serves nearly 40 students per semester focused on connecting the education, skills, and experiences gained during students’ experience in the [degree] multidisciplinary option program to aide in preparing for life after college. This course encourages students to uncover the 21st century challenges facing agriculture, while employing their skills and expertise to develop solutions. The course utilizes case study teaching methodology while leveraging article reviews, group work, industry interactions, and personal reflection to complement the diverse emphasis areas and professional goals of the students. In conclusion, the multidisciplinary degree option continues to grow in enrollment, emphasizing the importance for a capstone course. In addition to the instructional methods and course activities that have been successful, student feedback has been instrumental in providing new perspectives to enhance the course and provide value.
