In recent years, an important opportunity has emerged to better align college students’ career interests with professional pathways within Cooperative Extension, particularly in 4-H youth development. To address this opportunity, [University] Cooperative Extension implemented the NEXTGen 4-H Summer Camp Internship Program to increase student exposure to Extension work while supporting workforce and professional development. The program was designed to provide hands-on, immersive experiences that allow students to explore Extension and 4-H as viable career pathways. During the program, five undergraduate interns were placed at 4-H camps across [State] for an eight-week internship experience. Interns participated in daily camp operations, youth programming, and leadership activities while engaging in experiential learning, professional networking, and skill development. These experiences were intentionally structured to build leadership capacity and deepen students’ understanding of Cooperative Extension’s role in community engagement and agricultural education. Findings from program evaluation indicated high levels of student satisfaction and engagement. Interns reported overwhelmingly positive camp experiences and expressed increased interest in pursuing careers as Extension agents, working with 4-H youth development programs, or advocating for expanded access to experiential learning opportunities for college students. Many participants also indicated a strong desire to return to the program in subsequent years, suggesting sustained interest and perceived value of the internship experience. Overall, the NEXTGen 4-H Summer Camp Internship Program has proven effective in broadening students’ awareness of Cooperative Extension and its impact beyond traditional classroom or service-learning settings. The program highlights the importance of experiential learning in preparing, recruiting, and inspiring the next generation of agricultural and youth development professionals.
