Impact of Study Abroad Experiences on Undergraduate Students Studying Agriculture
Date & Time
Wednesday, June 24, 2026, 11:30 AM - 11:45 AM
Description

Study abroad programs have become increasingly popular among undergraduate institutions, specifically those offering agricultural programs of study. Due to limited research, many undergraduate agriculture students are unaware of the benefits of study abroad programs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of study abroad experiences on undergraduate students majoring in agriculture, with a focus on personal development, cultural awareness, and career readiness. The study used a non-experimental survey distributed to undergraduate students studying agriculture before and after they completed a study abroad trip. Of the respondents (n=48), students who had previously completed a study abroad trip were 80% more likely to participate again the following year. Additionally, students were shown to have an increased career enrichment level, though this did not correlate with their specific career choice. Finally, this study found that students were 20% more likely to be cognizant of international issues after completing a study abroad trip. Results show increased levels of cultural awareness, career readiness, and personal development, all of which should be used for trip recruitment purposes and student refinement. To further this study, additional research should be completed to enhance study abroad trip recruitment portfolios for agricultural undergraduate students.
